The Best Painters in Fenton, Mi

Looking for a professional painter near Grand Blanc, Mi? These are steps we recommend when painting interior trim.

How to Paint Interior Trim

Step 1: Sand Trim
Step 2: Caulk the Edges
Step 3: Repair Any Damages
Step 4: Prime – 1 Coat
Step 5: Paint – 2 Coats

Supplies: 80, 100, & 120 Sandpaper, Spackle, Putty knife, Bonding primer, Caulk, Caulk gun

Step 1: Sand Trim

For the primer to stick, we recommend scuffing up the trim with sandpaper. This gives the primer something to grab onto.

Step 2: Caulk the Edges

Stained wood trim is usually not caulked. When painted these gaps are easily noticed. It is recommended that you seal any gaps in the trim with caulking.

Step 3: Repair Any Damages

Fill nail holes with spackle or putty. Allow time to dry then sand the patches smooth.

Step 4: Prime - 1 Coat

A bonding primer is recommended for smooth surfaces like porcelain, PVC piping, and varnish. Bonding primers are a little more expensive than your normal drywall primers but are worth the money for clear coats or other extra smooth surfaces like polyurethane or varnish. Once the bonding primer sticks to the smooth surface any top coat can be placed on top.

Step 5: Paint - 2 Coats

We recommend an enamel or another hard finishing product. Trim normally takes a beating from vacuum cleaners and traffic. An enamel is durable enough to hold up.
